At least one fifth of the whole population of developed countries endures some of the typical symptoms of acid reflux at least once per week. Acid reflux as a disease is a prevalent condition for many inhabitants of developed countries. Well-being and quality of life is negatively affected for most acid reflux patients. Yet only a few suspect their medical condition and the unpleasant dangers.
Doctors and medical paraprofessionals agree widely that the first diagnosis of acid reflux (also known as GERD – gastro esophageal reflux disease), for the most part via a typical acid reflux symptoms questionnaire, is essential for applying the fastest and most effective treatment for this condition. Some 70% of GERD diagnostics that are made according to the presence of typical symptoms are accurate. Because gastro esophageal reflux disease can lead to a high amount of discomfort and serious complications for patients, it is of great importance to be able to spot its symptoms so as to diagnose it fast and cure it.
The most noticed symptom of gastro esophageal reflux disease is the persistent burning sensation called heartburn. Disagreeable and painful, this is felt in the area of the esophagus. Other typical symptoms of GERD are the following:
1. Dysphagia, meaning problems in swallowing or the sensation as if food were stuck in the throat. 2. Odynophagia, meaning pain when swallowing. 3. Gastric matter leading to complications in breathing in certain situations, because of regurgitation of gastric contents, in other words the uncontrolled backwards flux of stomach or esophageal contents into the throat.
As well as the above, about half of all sufferers from gastro esophageal reflux disease also say they get sinonasal symptoms at the same time (meaning symptoms concerning the sinuses and the nose)
Intense chest pain may be experienced, similar to that of a myocardial infarction and can in error be taken to be a heart attack. Unlike the symptoms of acid reflux however, cardiovascular chest pain is typically exacerbated by physical exercise. Abnormal symptoms concerning acid reflux are also chest pain that is spasmodic but non-cardiac, chronic wheezing and coughing (also known as acid reflux related asthma, the result of gastric content being sucked into the area of the lungs), and lung damage, with concomitant respiratory ailments such as asthma and pneumonia.
Further problems can affect the teeth (decay of the enamel) and the ears (otitis media) as well as damage to the vocal cords (hoarseness, laryngitis, cancer).
GERD symptoms can indicate a serious general lack of internal balance. The ability to see those symptoms as relating to acid reflux is critical to your health and well being in general as well as for avoiding potential complications. Long-standing reflux into the lower part of the esophagus can cause changes in the appearance of the lining cells, a condition called Barrett’s esophagus that can turn into esophageal cancer in about 1 of every 200 cases.
If the reflux reaches the upper parts of the esophagus, it can irritate adjacent structures and cause coughing, wheezing, chronic sore throat or hoarseness, which often leads to misdiagnoses, especially when the usual reflux symptoms are minimal or absent.
Thankfully, anyone can pinpoint typical acid reflux symptoms on his or her own, before an appointment to see the family physician. Upon identifying one or more of the symptoms above, an appointment is recommended with a certified doctor for a comprehensive examination. While a professional doctor can effectively diagnose initially and often propose relief in the form of drugs and antacids, remember that medication, whether prescription of over-the-counter, only treats the superficial symptoms of your medical condition. In addition, some drugs such as antacids can lead to various side effects.
The other way is to choose the holistic approach that treats the internal aspects that are responsible for gastro esophageal reflux disease in the first place, and that cures the problem at the root of the GERD, to finally solve the issue much more effectively, safely and for the long-term.

Licorice root, otherwise known as DGL is a natural herb that is used in many applications. It is also known as Yashti-Madhu, sweet root, Spanish licorice and Glycyrrhiza glabra. All forms are available widely on and off line. Licorice root is a natural supplement with expectorant properties. This can help with the release of damaged mucous lining caused by GERD which is why licorice root and acid reflux disease are sometimes mentioned together. With some properties of cortisone and estrogen, it also helps the body deal with stress.
Stress has not been shown to actually cause acid reflux, but it does typically heighten the symptoms to an extent. On the other hand, studies have shown that relaxation or stress relieving drugs, vitamins or minerals can significantly decrease the intensity of the symptoms.
By process, since licorice root helps us deal with stress, it tends to keep the body in a more relaxed state. This lessens the effects of GERD.
Licorice root is chemically known as deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL. Most of it is produced in Greece, Turkey and Asia. It has been used for centuries as a folk treatment for many disorders including acid reflux disease. Many users say that it is pleasant to take as it has a naturally pleasing flavor. This makes DGL a favorite of many sufferes looking for relief from their symptoms.
Licorice root as an acid reflux disease remedy is not used as a cure, but as a pain reliever. Regular dosing of licorice is said to lessen the pain of GERD symptoms during flare ups. So by default, it is a preventive measure as well. Patients who use licorice root report that usually once a day is sufficient, but twice daily might be called for in severe cases. Licorice root is not normally used in cases where there is already severe damage to the esophagus lining. It is more widely used in sufferers with mild symptoms like heartburn and indigestion.
The important thing to know here is that using licorice root, with it’s natural properties, is a good way to lessen the effects of GERD before they occur. DGL seems to have some effect on gastric acid production as well since it is widely used in the treatment of some types of stomach ulcers. In Japan, physicians have prescribed a man-made form of licorice to treat ulcer patients. While this treatment is not available in the USA, it has had some profound results in Japan.
A study was done on 100 patients that had not improved with conventional treatments. These patients were given the synthetic licorice for 6 weeks. Of these, 90 percent showed a pointed improvement. In 22 cases, the ulcers disappeared completely.
So even as a folk remedy or in a synthetic form, DGL or licorice root is shown to be effective as a pain reliever for GERD symptoms, as an effective preventive therapy and as an acid production reducer. All of these are good omens for the GERD sufferer.
As always, you should consult your physician before starting on a regimen of licorice root in any form. Some allergic reactions have been reported as well. So, to be safe, talk to your doctor to find out if a licorice root – acid reflux disease remedy is right for you.

All the nations of the world are always seeking to find a cure, a solution and a way out from certain discomforts of life brought by poverty, hunger, sickness, etc. But the good news boils down to our utmost hope that in any given problem comes out a definite solution. And having all the new technologies and discoveries today, acid reflux cure is never far off.
The principle to cure acid reflux today is to reverse back the abnormal backflow of stomach acid and juices into the esophagus. This involves a thorough study of the human body’s natural biochemistry and the chemical reactions associated with it. Its complexity has taken us into considering stages of acid reflux cure.
Stage 1: Preliminary Cure
The basic cure for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux begins with changing unhealthy lifestyle. If symptoms attack you can take antacids, or nonprescription medicines to reduce or block acid. H2 blockers (i.e. Pepcid) or a proton pump inhibitor (i.e. Prilosec OTC) are the most popular medicines. However with frequent and severe GERD symptoms, stronger dosage or prescription medications along with lifestyle changes are necessary for successful acid reflux cure. In this case:
• Try different medications or combinations of medications until you found the one that best relieves your symptoms.
• Take a gradual increase of the dose or frequency of the medication until you have come up at the most effective dose for you.
• Long-term medication may be required to treat severe, persistent symptoms or complications of GERD.
For other severe cases, your doctor may advice you to undergo a test using an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (esophagogastroduodenoscopy, or EGD) to detect Barrett’s esophagus (a change in the cells of the esophagus) which can make a person become more prone to esophagus cancer.
Practically, a helpful way to cure GERD is simply avoiding the things that stimulate your symptoms. This includes abstaining from spicy and fatty foods, chocolates, drinks with caffeine, alcohol, and vices like smoking, and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or other medications that trigger GERD symptoms.
Stage 2: Continuous Cure
It is important that you religiously continue the medications that best suit you as per advice of your health expert because discontinuing the therapy often brings back the symptoms. Your doctor will guide you in the proper timing, frequency of terms or intervals of taking medicines.
To balance the effectiveness and safety of various treatments, you have to cooperate well with your doctor. Otherwise your condition will just worsen and even get fatal.
Stage 3: Critical Cure
At a critical stage of acid reflux cure, complications have been developed and no signs of significant improvements are observed. You may begin taking more frequent medication or switched to a stronger prescribed medicine. The role of a physician is very much needed to check, reevaluate and assess your health conditions, including your diet and lifestyle.
Surgical operations may be considered when:
• All the possible treatments, remedies, relief and medical cure are not able to remove your symptoms, and if symptoms are directly caused by reflux of stomach juices.
• You personally reject oral medication or unable to take medications over an extended period of time and are willing to accept the risks of surgery.
• You are suffering from different complications such as asthma, hoarseness, or cough along with incurable reflux symptoms.
Surgery may be an effective GERD cure but the risks of failure, complications, and side effects associated with it need to be thoroughly examined.
Essentially, to cure acid reflux today is to know the causes, symptoms and how they come together in your body that affects your system. When choosing the right acid reflux cure, always consider the long term effect. A short term cure is usually a short-cut term of you life. Always be patient to live life to the fullest!

First things first, what is acid reflux? The more technical term is GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This is where mucous damage exists due to the production of abnormal gastric juice content in the esophagus.
Usual symptoms for acid reflux include heartburn that is persistent, chest pain, morning hoarseness, problems in swallowing, as well as a feeling that there is something stuck in the throat. Bad breath is also caused by GERD or acid reflux as well as cough that is dry.
So now that you know you have them, what should you do to help prevent acid reflux?
First things first, the most common and convenient way to relieve the symptoms that acid reflux bring are through antacids that quickly and effectively do away with the symptoms mentioned. However, a regular habit of eating appropriately and in the appointed time – such as not skipping meals, not overeating and avoiding acidic food – help eliminate acid reflux as well.
How should one with acid reflux eat then?
Contrary to popular belief, size does matter. It therefore helps that meals taken are small yet frequent compared to large portioned meals at regular times of the day.
The logic behind this concept works this way. Foods that are taken in little amounts would allow the stomach to also exert little effort in digesting it therefore requiring less secretion of acid during the process of digestion.
So what foods should one eat?
Those that are rich in carbohydrates are advisable to be taken in. Such foods include bread, rice, pasta. These types of meals are all easy in one’s stomach and any excess acid is tied up by them.
What foods should one avoid?
Foods that are high in fat – for instance those that one buys in fast food joints – should very well be avoided. These types of food usually stay longer in the stomach and takes a lot more acid in order to digest them.
How should one eat?
Try not to forget that over-eating is a big no-no. Eating too many too much actually stimulates the tummy to secret a lot more acid required to digest the items one is taking in. As much as possible, do everything in moderation.
Limit life’s little pleasures
Of course, having acid reflux does not mean that one should totally take out and avoid experiencing life’s pleasures. All that is needed is to limit one’s intake of the following food items if total elimination would prove to be difficult: alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, even tea. It is your choice, either that piping hot coffee or the opportunity to let your stomach make and break acid. Remember that anything put in your stomach affects the way acid is produced in them. This applies to all types of beverage also. Believe it or not, beer – everyone’s best friend – actually doubles the acid secreted by the stomach within an hour of its intake.
What should be your position after eating then?
As much as possible, stay upright for an average of forty five minutes after taking a meal. This allows the stomach to do its job the best way it could. However, when acid reflux has set in and you need to lie down, do so with the head elevated about six to eight inches from the bed.
All in all, acid reflux is totally controllable provided you take care of your self, your stomach and your diet.

You have acid reflux and it is not fun. Trust me, I know exactly how uncomfortable acid reflux disease can be and how it can slow you down. It is much more than simple heartburn which we all experience from time to time. Acid reflux occurs when the formation of gas and acidic things in the stomach causes severe pain or a burning sensation in the stomach and chest. This is known as Acid Reflux Disease, also known as Gastroespohaheal Reflux Disease.

What happens is that you have eaten something you should not have. It does not need to be something you KNOW you should not eat, because acid reflux affects each of us differently. Unfortunately, it is only from experience that we learn what we can eat and what causes acid reflux to flare up. And things change over time, so every now and then we may want to try different things out, because we get older, our tolerances for certain foods may either increase or decrease.

From a medical standpoint, acid reflex is a physiological condition that typically occurs when there is inappropriate activity in the lower esophageal sphincter, or in other words, the muscular valve that connects the esophagus to the stomach. This activity allows the contents of the stomach to empty into, or REFLUX, into the esophagus and throat. This happens when this valve does not close properly or when this muscle relaxes, thereby allowing the contents of the stomach to back up.

But you don’t care what happens physiologically. All you know is that it happens and you need to know what to do about it. If you have been diagnosed with acid reflux, you need to see your doctor on a regular basis to make sure that it is kept under control. The biggest thing you can do to avoid acid reflux is to avoid foods that are known to increase the level of stomach acid.

What if you already are having episodes of acid reflux and want to control them? You may wish to consider a natural cure. There are many natural cures and natural health remedies that are readily available on the market today that will help control the effects of acid reflux.

You need to make sure that what you are experiencing is really acid reflux and not a sign of something more serious like heart disease. But once that determination is made, one popular way to combat is to use to antacids. Depending on the severity of the affliction, this can be as simple as Rolaids or Tums, or maybe requiring a bit more strength such as Pepto-Bismol or Mylanta. You should be keeping a close eye on exactly what kinds of treatments seem to work best for you, since we are all different, and different remedies will have varying results. The remedy that works for you may not work nearly as well for the guy next door.

Do not allow acid reflux to ruin your day or your night out. You can control acid reflux by exercising a bit of good judgment. Instead of ordering your seafood blackened, order it grilled. Instead of french fries, get a baked potato instead. Your choice of foods is going to play your greatest role in avoiding more acid reflux.

The typical signs of gastro esophageal reflux disease include regurgitation and heartburn, but can also be seen as pains in the chest, dry coughing, reactive respiration difficulties, painful swallowing, indigestion and a sensation of something lodged in your throat. Gastro esophageal reflux disease, known in layman’s terms as acid reflux, is a chronic, distressing and discomforting medical ailment negatively influencing one’s quality of life. Over time, ignoring GERD can mean degeneration into serious complications like ulcers and Barrett’s esophagus, as well as a cancer that starts off in glandular tissue, and that is called adenocarcinoma.
In published research in 1997 in the Gastroenterology journal, Locke, Talley and Fett showed that acid reflux symptoms happen weekly to up to 20% of people. Prevalence of 30% to 40% was shown for the general public by further research. This indicates that gastro esophageal reflux disease is a widespread scourge in developed western society, especially in the US. About 60% of individuals have GERD symptoms once per month or more.
Gastro esophageal reflux disease is a medical conundrum with complex etiology, meaning that it is brought on by several factors, both inner and outer. Direct contributing factors are: debilitation of the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) muscle which causes stomach juices to travel back from the digestive system to the esophagus with an excess of stomach acidity.
Substandard diet plans can put undue stress and workload on the digestive system, when the system is trying to operate properly to prevent surplus acidity or back flow of contents. Aging also worsens the problem as general relaxing of all muscles including the LES means that acid reflux is among the difficulties that are heightened, as a person gets older. Several hidden causes also provoke acid reflux condition in addition to these other more visible physiological factors. Diet and lifestyle have a direct or indirect influence, as do genetic characteristics, which then shape the context in which GERD develops. As an example, specific foodstuffs have been pinpointed as weakening the LES and being directly responsible for acid reflux.
Solutions for Acid reflux can be classified in three main ways: surgical operation, cures by medicaments and all natural holistic programs.
Surgery for GERD targets local repair of the malfunctioning LES. The operation consists of wrapping the gastric fundus (parts of the stomach) around the bottom of the esophagus so that the natural valve can be reinforced between the stomach and the esophagus. In this way refluxed content from the stomach is prevented from meeting the esophagus. Surgery for acid reflux has significant drawbacks: after operation, complications such as difficulty in belching, dysphagia, diarrhea and flatulence are all possible. Death can also follow in 1 in 1,000 patients even though the mortality rate is relatively low.
Medications of GERD have been designed to bring temporary relief by targeting the ailments of the digestive system that are related to acid reflux. For instance, antacids have been designed to neutralize esophageal acidity, while Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) inhibit the stomach cell mechanism that generated acid in the stomach. Regrettably, many medicaments only tackle GERD symptoms, and the underlying causes are simply ignored. The effect of acid reflux medications is only temporary and a long-term dependency is often created while the real reasons for gastro esophageal reflux disease go unchecked. GERD medications used for the long term also cause numerous secondary effects.
Many medical studies published over the last decade have pointed to the use of several all-natural holistic protocols to positively deal with gastro esophageal reflux disease and even allow for full restoration of health. Solutions in these programs include; elevation of the head of the bed by six inches, reducing the eating of fat, quitting smoking, stopping alcohol intake, weight loss, elimination of toxins and eradicating parasites, as well as avoiding eating large meals or food that weakens the LES.
Holistic treatments can bring amazing positive changes to your well being and quality of life. Did anyone tell you? There is an all-natural holistic solution to stop gastro esophageal reflux disease and effectively and safely keep GERD away from you.

Not many people understand the medical significance of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) and the symptoms that go with it. Decline in general quality of life is the result for many GERD sufferers. For inhabitants of developed countries, the problem is considerable. No less than 1 in 5 of all inhabitants in western countries are victims every week of some of the common GERD symptoms.
From different approximations made, some 70% of diagnostics using the identification of usual symptoms are in fact precise. Because GERD can make patients suffer a great deal and also give serious complications, it is essential to be able to see the symptoms, diagnose them and quickly arrange treatment. Doctors and paraprofessionals alike think that a first diagnosis of GERD, often via a questionnaire on typical gastro esophageal reflux disease manifestations, is critical to effectively and quickly treat this condition.
Symptoms of GERD may include: nose and sinus problems, chest pain (can be mistaken for heart attack-related pain), dry coughing, wheezing chronically, asthma, nausea, fallout of tooth enamel, bad breath, and dysphagia (feeling of an irregularity in the back of the throat). Acid reflux may also attack the ears (otitis media) and the voice (ranging from laryngitis, hoarseness to cancer). Heartburn and regurgitation are among the commonest symptoms of GERD. It is the contents of the stomach and its acidic juices, being thrown back up in the esophagus, that makes for the distressing burning feeling associated to damage of the esophageal lining where gastro esophageal reflux disease is happening.
The essential thing for regaining health and well being, and avoiding complications is the ability to pinpoint those symptoms and interpret them in the light of gastro esophageal reflux disease.
Symptoms of acid reflux are often an outer danger sign of internal general imbalance. Neglecting gastro esophageal reflux disease can result in major physical distress and may also cause severe health problems like cancer of the esophagus and pneumonia. Luckily, victims can identify the greater part of GERD symptoms before seeing a doctor. If a symptom (or several of them) occur regularly, the recommendation is to consult a gastrointestinal specialist for a full diagnosis.
Although a gastrointestinal endoscopist can provide a good preliminary diagnosis, conventional medicine as a cure for gastro esophageal reflux has two major drawbacks:
1. Life long dependency on drugs can result because a daily dose is required to keep the symptoms down but no action is taken on fixing the real causes.
2. Medicaments available as prescriptions and over the counters only act on the external disease symptoms, but acid reflux goes far deeper than this, being the result of a range of different inner and outer aspects.
3. Some drugs such as PPIs and antacids can contribute numerous undesirable side effects.
The holistic program that targets the factors that are both internal and external and that trigger acid reflux, also addresses the basic problem that causes this condition. It is a much more effective answer and it works for the long term. Whatever your degree of GERD is, tackling this condition by using a holistic approach will make sure that the fundamental causes of your acid reflux problem are dealt with in safety and with permanence, to bring significant improvement to your well being.

Data from recent studies show that children from 3 to 7 must endure acid reflux symptoms between 2 and 8% of the time, with this figure rising to 20% of infants who suffer. Since the 1990s, infant gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been on the increase. Infants challenged on a developmental or neurological level are even more at risk from attacks of GERD.
Before relating the reasons and dangers of GERD in babies, we’ll look briefly at the cause both local and immediate underlying this medical condition. In plain words, acid reflux is when the digestive system malfunctions. The weakening of the LES is the most common cause for this. The LES is the lower esophageal sphincter. When it is not strong enough to keep all the stomach contents in the stomach, then those contents move to the throat and even past the larynx to get into the upper air passage. Reflux may also occur under normal LES pressure, for example after feeding, crying, going to the toilet and coughing. However there may also be serious complications of health involved such as infections, ulcers, pain, feeding problems, issues with the voice, going sometimes as far as cancer.
Many infants “spit up” on a regular basis, which, as vomiting, does not in itself cause discomfort, vomit passing through the mouth or nose. GERD and normal vomiting can be easily mistaken one for the other in infants. Diagnosis of GERD can be a special problem. Because of the limited volume of their esophagus, infants vomit or regurgitate more than adults. To add further difficulty, signs that all may not be well are difficult to see, especially as infants have no way of putting into words what they are feeling.
Additional signs include pain in the belly, infections of the middle ear, a whistling breathing sound, enlargement of the adenoids, chronic coughing, asthma, anemia, spitting up of blood (known as hematemesis), croup that repeats, back-arching and inflammation of the nose and /or sinus. When GERD attacks your infant, a number of further symptoms such as these appear. For instance, as GERD vomiting is inherently painful, babies who vomit too often will often cry or scream for hours on end or stay awake unable to go to sleep, an indication that they may well be victims of this.
Early diagnosis and treatment is justified, and they are prerequisites for your infant to return to safety and good health. An appointment with a gastroenterologist or an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor is the best solution for an accurate diagnosis for your infant. The threat from ignoring acid reflux in infants is that it may evolve into further serious complications as well. An infant who comes to believe that feeding will be painful may stop breastfeeding and lose weight. Inherently serious conditions such as erosive esophagitis can also be the result of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
If a diagnosis of GERD is the doctor’s opinion, then parents must make a choice of treatment. Options of remedies for an infant with gastroesophageal reflux disease are of three kinds: surgical; medications (over the counter or prescription); or a holistic program.
Surgical solutions are not often considered, because of the danger of serious complications worse than acid reflux itself. Nissan Fundoplication, a surgical procedure, is one possibility, done to reduce looseness between the esophagus and stomach.
Prescription medicaments are also unsatisfactory for the reasons following: 1. Medications concentrate too much on symptoms of GERD (such as acid generation) but skip fundamental causes, such as lifestyle, diet and inner body triggers and factors. 2. For infants even more than adults, medications have certain risks. Cisapride with its severe secondary effect of heart arrythmia was taken out of circulation for that very reason. Pneumonia and Tourette’s syndrome are some of the serious side effects of other common medications. Reglan and bethanechol for example have not even been tested for babies as prescribed reflux medications. 3. Medication of any kind may engender a long-term reliance and work against your child’s auto-immune system to then aggravate the condition.
Studies done recently show the benefit of all natural holistic treatments of GERD. For instance, studies done by Ravelli, Tobanelli and Volpi which appeared in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition in 2001, showed that formula based on cow’s milk can result in delayed gastric emptying in infants with allergy to milk proteins. Studies by Rudolph, Mazur and Liptak also published in this journal indicated that changing from cow’s milk formula to a formula based in casein hydrolysate could be better for infants who vomit. And also, for infants with GERD, breastfeeding turns out to have significant advantages compared to any formula for babies, because milk from the breast is better for the digestion and gives faster digestive transit.
The conclusions above as well as many others reinforce the theory that infant GERD is not local in its manifestation (the esophagus only), but in fact that it is a bodily reaction to a set of factors that are internal, dietary and environmental. This explains why the holistic approach taken by holistic medicine which focuses on protecting your infant from gastroesophageal reflux disease can be safe and also the most effective choice in the long term.
Had you heard that the best way to protect your infant from the distress and pain of GERD symptoms is to choose a holistic approach in conjunction with comprehensive moves towards a natural lifestyle and diet?

Many people know they have heartburn but a common question in doctors offices today is just what is acid reflux disease? Acid reflux disease or GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) has become common in recent years. It is also termed GORD when spelled oesophageal. GERD occurs when gastric fluids flow back into and cause damage to the esophagus as well as the mucous membranes within.
In adults, heartburn is a major symptom of GERD. This is usually felt as a burning sensation behind the breastbone. Other conditions associated with GERD include esophagitis (an inflammation of the esophagus), difficulty swallowing and chronic chest pain. This chest pain can sometimes be misconstrued as heart disease and should not be ignored under any circumstances.
While occasional heartburn is commonplace, it does not necessarily indicate GERD. If you even think that GERD is possible, see your doctor immediately.
Typical symptoms include hoarseness, voice changes, earaches, burning in the chest and nausea. GERD has also been linked to cases of esophageal cancer in older patients.
In addition, the presence of a hiatal hernia raises the risk of developing GERD.
In children, GERD may be very difficult to diagnose. Frequent spitting up, vomiting, coughing and respiratory trouble are good indicators of pediatric GERD. While there are other symptoms, a patient may have one or many of these symptoms. It is estimated that about 35% of all babies are born with reflux disease. Of these children born with reflux disease, most will outgrow it by their first birthday.
The first step in diagnosing acid reflux disease or GERD is taking a full history of the patient’s symptoms. Tests may be done including a barium swallow, EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) or a 24-hour monitoring of the Ph levels in the esophagus. The EGD is a form of endoscopy and is only performed on patients with advanced or alarm symptoms.
GERD or acid reflux disease is caused by a failure of one or more of the components of the esophageal tube including the anti-reflux barrier (ARB), gastroesophageal valve (GEV) and lower esophageal sphincter (LES). In recent years, more focus has been placed on the GEV as it has been identified as the central point for controlling GERD. The GEV alone is capable of stopping reflux as has been shown in tests on cadavers.
Treatments can be non-invasive, pharmaceutical or even surgical in extreme cases. Many times the physician will suggest a lifestyle change.
Some foods have been linked to the development of GERD.
There are also a few self-treatments including not eating before bed and sleeping on the left side. These have been proven to lessen the effects of GERD in patients with post-bedtime symptoms.
Keeping all of this in mind, GERD is actually not an acid problem but a muscular weakness disease so the net time you are wondering what is acid reflux disease caused from, you can stop blaming the wrong thing. The weakening of the esophageal muscles causes the acid to back up into the esophagus. So if you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please see a physician as soon as possible. It could save your life.
