There are typically three principal kinds of treatment for Heartburn: classical medicine, surgical operations and the natural/holistic solution. These methods are very different in the way that they operate and their approach to resolving the different underlying factors, as well as in their effects over the long-term. It’s important to select the correct and most effective solution for you and that means getting precise information on the real reasons that lie behind the symptoms of heartburn.
Heartburn is the external manifestation of acid reflux or GERD (gastro-esophageal reflux disease). GERD is what happens when the muscular valve between the esophagus and the stomach is weakened. This valve is also known as the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). When the LES is in a normal, healthy state, it allows food to pass one way into the stomach, but shuts afterwards to prevent acidic stomach contents from being pushed back the opposite way. It is when this muscle relaxes at the wrong moment that acid content refluxes into the esophagus and causes the pain and burning that is known as heartburn.
Physicians habitually treat heartburn and associated problems by prescribing medications, some of which can be bought over the counter. These drugs to treat acid reflux can be further divided into three categories:
1. Antacids, examples being Maalox, Rolaids, Mylanta and Tums. They neutralize stomach acid by creating a covering that envelops the food content.
2. H2 blockers to reduce acid creation, examples being Pepcid AC, Axid AR and Zantac 75. They diminish acid production in the stomach.
3. PPI (Proton Pump Inhibitors), examples of these being Nexium, Protonix and Prilosec, which act by blocking the stomach cell mechanism that releases acid.
Although short-term alleviation of pain can be effected by these drugs, long-term usage can lead to a number of problems. These drugs do not treat the underlying causes but only the symptoms and they do this by changing the chemical ingredients of the gastric system. The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery published an article in 2004 to show that PPIs do not help with the frequency of reflux attacks for GERD victims. PPIs simply change the acidic contents into alkali ones. The reflux still occurs in the esophagus with acid content now being changed in to an alkaline bile that may in fact be no better. These drugs in general only have a temporary effect and can also lead to long-term dependency. GERD drugs such as these can also generate many undesirable secondary effects.
The next alternative to drugs is surgical intervention. The surgeon uses the upper part of the stomach to wrap around the lower part of the esophagus in order to reinforce the valve mechanism between the esophagus and the stomach. This is designed to stop the valve opening when it should not, thereby halting the flow back of stomach contents into the esophagus.
This solution is not without its problems however. Risks and secondary effects include cramps in the abdomen, diarrhea, nauseous feelings, bloating and problems in swallowing. A patient who relies solely on this is likely to be disappointed as without the right lifestyle of diet alterations, heartburn symptoms can come back again.
The major drawback of these classical methods for resolving heartburn is that they all target local GERD symptoms and give solutions only for reducing the symptom, and not the real cause. They try to decrease the quantity of acid produced, or neutralize the acid or tighten mechanically the LES. Yet in no case are the real causes being addressed.
It is the simultaneous existence of different medical and lifestyle factors that provoke acid reflux. Genetic weakness, fatty foods, being overweight and specific lifestyle and nutrition factors all conspire to weaken the LES which stops it from closing properly. Inner equilibrium can also be perturbed by Candida infection and poor diet and lifestyle habits, including undue stress and inadequate sleep patterns, which lead to excess acidity, toxic accumulation and fermentation. It is the underlying factors that must be tackled to treat heartburn. This is the only possibility for permanently solve acid reflux and to prevent it from happening again.

First things first, what is acid reflux? The more technical term is GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. This is where mucous damage exists due to the production of abnormal gastric juice content in the esophagus.
Usual symptoms for acid reflux include heartburn that is persistent, chest pain, morning hoarseness, problems in swallowing, as well as a feeling that there is something stuck in the throat. Bad breath is also caused by GERD or acid reflux as well as cough that is dry.
So now that you know you have them, what should you do to help prevent acid reflux?
First things first, the most common and convenient way to relieve the symptoms that acid reflux bring are through antacids that quickly and effectively do away with the symptoms mentioned. However, a regular habit of eating appropriately and in the appointed time – such as not skipping meals, not overeating and avoiding acidic food – help eliminate acid reflux as well.
How should one with acid reflux eat then?
Contrary to popular belief, size does matter. It therefore helps that meals taken are small yet frequent compared to large portioned meals at regular times of the day.
The logic behind this concept works this way. Foods that are taken in little amounts would allow the stomach to also exert little effort in digesting it therefore requiring less secretion of acid during the process of digestion.
So what foods should one eat?
Those that are rich in carbohydrates are advisable to be taken in. Such foods include bread, rice, pasta. These types of meals are all easy in one’s stomach and any excess acid is tied up by them.
What foods should one avoid?
Foods that are high in fat – for instance those that one buys in fast food joints – should very well be avoided. These types of food usually stay longer in the stomach and takes a lot more acid in order to digest them.
How should one eat?
Try not to forget that over-eating is a big no-no. Eating too many too much actually stimulates the tummy to secret a lot more acid required to digest the items one is taking in. As much as possible, do everything in moderation.
Limit life’s little pleasures
Of course, having acid reflux does not mean that one should totally take out and avoid experiencing life’s pleasures. All that is needed is to limit one’s intake of the following food items if total elimination would prove to be difficult: alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, even tea. It is your choice, either that piping hot coffee or the opportunity to let your stomach make and break acid. Remember that anything put in your stomach affects the way acid is produced in them. This applies to all types of beverage also. Believe it or not, beer – everyone’s best friend – actually doubles the acid secreted by the stomach within an hour of its intake.
What should be your position after eating then?
As much as possible, stay upright for an average of forty five minutes after taking a meal. This allows the stomach to do its job the best way it could. However, when acid reflux has set in and you need to lie down, do so with the head elevated about six to eight inches from the bed.
All in all, acid reflux is totally controllable provided you take care of your self, your stomach and your diet.

Is there really a GERD diet that can help acid reflux victims to get rid of those annoying symptoms? Recent studies reinforce the hypothesis that acid reflux patients, especially those with less pronounced symptoms, can make major improvements to their medical condition by relatively simple diet changes. Modifying food plans to cure acid reflux is given strong support by classical and alternative medical thinking.
The connection between eating and GERD treatment can be shown from the gastric/digestive pathophysiology of this medical ailment. In general, GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) also called acid reflux, is a functional problem of the digestive system. Gastro esophageal reflux disease happens when the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) – a muscle acting as a valve to shut off the esophagus from the stomach – does not close correctly and acid content flows back from the stomach, or “refluxes”, into the esophagus.
Acid reflux symptoms can differ between different people. Heartburn is what most victims experience – the burning feeling in the chest and/or throat that occurs when stomach acid is refluxed to contact the esophageal lining. Patients mention other symptoms in addition, including glutition difficulties, chest pain, hoarseness, the impression of the throat begin blocked and dry coughing. Without being treated, acid reflux can engender significant medical difficulties, such as ulcers, Barrett’s esophagus and for some, cancer. This is why gastro esophageal reflux disease must be treated in a fully comprehensive and timely fashion.
Reducing weight and changing diet are both highly recommended for GERD sufferers as the preliminary step for dealing with this condition (and as part of a full holistic agenda).
Foods that contain certain bio-chemicals or that encourage their presence in the human body (high fat foods, mint, chocolate) should be dropped from a diet for acid reflux. These substances include a range of naturally occurring items which interfere with the correct working of the LES, such as dopamine, prostaglandins and acetylcholine. Nicotine, caffeine and alcohol also interfere in a similar fashion by forcing a reduction of pressure on the LES and so consumption should also be decreased. One of the main planks of a diet plan to deal with GERD is to avoid foods that have this debilitating effect on the LES muscle.
Other changes include the elevation of the head of the bed by 6 to 8 inches to decrease the exposure of the esophagus to acid. A further important principle of diet plans to manage acid reflux is to eat the last meal of the day at least three hours before going to bed, as food (above all dairy products) is a major factor in secretion of acid.
A lot of acid reflux victims comment on the degradation of their symptoms when they consume too much spicy foods or coffee. Meals containing a lot of spice will often irritate the esophageal mucosa.
Although a diet oriented towards GERD can give immediate alleviation, it should be remembered that a change in dietary patterns is not a solution in itself, especially in advanced cases of acid reflux. It is just a first, important step in a fully all-natural holistic program.
Has anyone told you? Your painful and distressing symptoms of gastro esophageal reflux disease can be eliminated forever without any conventional medicine or “over the counter” medication. The holistic approach (specific herbs and vitamin supplements while following a complete set of diet guidelines, eliminating toxins and using Candida control protocols) can cure GERD in a natural way and stop it from coming back, effectively and permanently.

The causes of acid reflux (GERD) are rather simple should they not lead to complications. GERD without complications causes heartburn, nausea, and regurgitation. However, the complications are rather severe, ranging from an ulcerated esophagus, symptoms of coughing and asthma to Barrett’s esophagus which left untreated can lead to esophageal cancer and eventually death. So, it is best to seek treatment for the symptoms of Acid Reflux disease (GERD) before complications have set in.
What is Acid Reflux Disease?
Acid reflux disease is frequent (and sometimes not so frequent) regurgitation (liquid or food being forced in reverse direction in the digestive system) of digestive juices into the esophagus. These juices contain the digestive juices, one of which is a very strong acid (hydrochloric acid, HCL) which burns the lower esophagus and causes much pain and sometimes regurgitation of small amounts of liquid into the mouth. Acid reflux also causes heartburn and nausea.
Should these symptoms persist without monitoring and treatment the disease can lead to precancerous skin cells growing in the esophagus, this is called Barrett’s esophagus and can lead to cancer of the esophagus.
What causes acid reflux disease?
There are several causes of GERD. Acid reflux disease can be caused by any one of several disorders of the upper digestive tract. It is also a possible disturbance pregnancy because both hormones and the growing fetus are pushing on the digestive tract and can cause relaxation or opening of the lower esophageal sphincter which can cause a reflux of digestive juices into the esophagus and thus acid reflux disease. Hiatal hernia, which is a hernia or distention of the walls of the lower esophagus weakens the lower esophagus and thus sometimes causes GERD. The reason it only causes this in some cases is not known. There are several others such as congenital weakness or other abnormalities in the lower esophagus.
Signs and symptoms of acid reflux disease
The chief signs and symptoms are heartburn, a pain in the lower esophagus caused by the acid having prolonged contact with the unprotected lining of the lower esophagus. Nausea and regurgitation are the common symptoms which are caused by some of the digestive juices being forced up into the mouth.
Burning feeling in chest or heartburn after taking your food, burning sensation in throat, becoming croaky and even loosing voice, lingering bitter acidic taste in mouth, continuous coughing, finding it difficult to swallow are other few common symptoms.
The larger problem with GERD is with the possible complications that can occur with prolonged damage of the lower esophagus. Barrett’s cells have been discussed and are a serious complication that can lead to esophageal cancer. Other complications are an ulcerated esophagus, and coughing for unknown reasons, either because of the irritation in the region of the lungs and esophagus, or because an asthma attack has been triggered.
Treatment of acid reflux disease
The treatments for GERD (acid reflux disease) are certain medications, and a change of diet and other minor lifestyle changes that assist in decreasing the symptoms. Acidic foods are eliminated, fatty foods which can lower the LES (lower esophageal sphincter) and thus open it and cause acid reflux. Changes in sleeping patterns are also needed to prevent heartburn at night.

Acid reflux, also known as GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) is the phenomenon where stomach juices including acid travel back (reflux) to the esophagus from the stomach. Research done recently shows that some one in five people in the developed world must put up once a week with symptoms related to acid reflux, while a further one in five suffer from the distress and sometimes pain of these symptoms at least every month. However, most patients do not really know what GERD is.What are the local causes of acid reflux?
Gastro esophageal reflux disease happens when the lower esophageal sphincter (the name for the circle of muscle that is the valve between the stomach and the esophagus) does not shut correctly and lets stomach juices be thrown back up, or reflux, into the esophagus. When the esophagus lining is impacted by these juices, this produces the burning sensation in the chest and/or the throat, which is called heartburn.
Although it seems strange, heartburn may also be symptomatic of too little stomach acid. The level of stomach acid has to be enough for digestion to be effective, and prevent the stomach from being obliged to work much harder for the food to be digested. In time, the extra effort of the stomach can lead to acid reflux happening.
As well as the immediate factors leading to gastro esophageal reflux disease, there are also genetic factors (beyond our control) and several other internal factors and cofactors, that make for a context encouraging GERD. A long-term solution can only come from treating the internal factors primarily responsible for causing GERD.What are the symptoms of acid reflux?
Healthy people also get occasional heartburn, and this alone does not mean that you have a gastro esophageal reflux disease. Diagnosis of GERD is typically based on a recurring (twice weekly or more) manifestation of heartburn. Symptoms may be different for some GERD patients, such as chest pains, morning hoarseness or problems swallowing. Other patients experience a sensation of food getting stuck in their throat or choking or stricture. Recurring dry coughs are also symptoms for this last group of patients. What are the dangers of acid reflux?
Neglected GERD can have not only unpleasant, perhaps painful symptoms, but can also generate grave complications. Firstly, tissue damage scars can cause constriction of the esophagus and problems in swallowing. Secondly, gastric acid can inflame the esophagus over time to lead to ulcers or bleeding. Thirdly, some victims can develop a condition where cells in the lining of the esophagus take on abnormal shapes and colors, a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus. Protracted Barrett’s esophagus may result in cancer, notably for adults who are more than 60 years old.Solutions for acid reflux
Treating gastro esophageal reflux disease can be done in one of three ways: a surgical operation; prescription or over-the-counter medicaments; and holistic therapy, using dietary and lifestyle changes, detox, and specific herbal supplements. In very many cases, gastro esophageal reflux disease can be resolved and stopped by natural solutions, avoiding the dangers of surgical treatment or prescribed medicaments. This holistic approach to GERD is also confirmed by a review of recent research that indicates that acid reflux is a medical condition provoked mostly by factors of diet, lifestyle and behavior.
So what is acid reflux? Seen in the context of conventional medicine that compares it to other similar recurring conditions, acid reflux is to be treated by constantly ingesting drugs, antacids and over the counter medicament that only bring temporary relief.
Seen from the holistic viewpoint, gastro esophageal reflux disease is the danger signal for a major internal imbalance that must be corrected. Alternative treatments for GERD therefore (homeopathic cures, herbal treatment, diet and lifestyle alterations and detoxification), by solving the internal cause of acid reflux, are inherently better compared to conventional cures that only bring superficial relief.

Bananas and many other foods are a safe and beneficial part of a diet for acid reflux. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for all foods. There are many types of foods that can trigger or make acid reflux symptoms, such as heartburn, worse. The following is information regarding five common types of foods linked to acid reflux, as well as suggestions for acid reflux friendly alternatives.
Fatty foods – Foods high in fat (I.E. red meat, sausages, bacon, ham, fast food, most processed foods) tend to be harder to digest and remain in the stomach longer. The longer food stays within the stomach, the higher the risk of acid reflux because there is a delay in the stomach emptying its contents.
Alternative: You need to avoid fatty foods and eliminate them whenever possible from your diet. Opt instead for lean white meat, fish and eggs, instead of red meat, and if you eat meat on occasion, eat only a small portion of lean meat that is grilled or baked – never fried!
Fried and spicy foods – Spicy foods (I.E. black pepper, Chile peppers, Chinese, Indian and Mexican cuisine.) and foods that are deep fried, fried in butter or stir fried (I.E. potato chips, fried tortilla chips, French fries, fried rice, etc.) can be hard to digest, increase acid production, and relax the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), all of which increases the possibility of acid reflux.
Alternative: Use herbs to add zing to your meals and limit the amount of spice you put in your food. Instead of deep or pan frying, bake, steam or grill most of your food.
Dairy products -Dairy products (I.E. milk, cream, butter, cheese, ice cream made from real cream, etc.), especially when consumed frequently or before bed, tend to encourage acid production and can cause heartburn.
Alternative: If you are not allergic to dairy products, you can still enjoy them in moderation, but they should be consumed in small quantities during the daytime. If, on occasion, you wish to have a glass of milk at night, accompany the milk with a food high in carbohydrates (I.E. bread) to help speed up digestion and minimize acid production.
Caffeinated and carbonated beverages – Carbonated beverages (I.E. soda and carbonated water) trigger burping, which, in turn, can encourage acid reflux. Caffeinated beverages (I.E. soda, coffee, tea and decaffeinated coffee) also encourage acid reflux because they cause the LES to relax.
Alternative: The ideal beverage is plain water. However, if you would like to include a warm beverage in your diet for acid reflux, warm water with honey, herbal tea, or caffeine free coffee are ideal options. If you wish to drink soda, drink non-caffeinated soda and let it go flat before drinking to reduce the carbonation.
Citrus fruits – Citrus fruits (I.E. oranges, pineapples, lemons, limes, etc.) trigger acid reflux because they stimulate acid production in your stomach.
Alternatives: Although citrus fruits should be avoided, there are many other fruits such as bananas and apples that you can eat, and are considered very beneficial at suppressing acid and treating acid reflux symptoms. Other fruits that can be added to a diet for acid reflux are berries such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries.
Keep in mind, though many of the alternative food suggestions are suitable for the majority of acid reflux sufferers, every person responds differently to food. Therefore, it is important that you find out which foods trigger your symptoms so you can limit and avoid these foods when creating your diet for acid reflux.

GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) is not actually a disease. A condition is brought on by poor eating habits. Eating the wrong food and not chewing your food properly is the main cause of acid reflux. This condition can be overcome with proper eating habits. An acid reflux diet is your best option to get back on a healthy eating track.

If your acid reflux flares up at night then you could be eating too much at dinner or too much before bed. Eating large meals will cause the stomach to produce too much acid. Try to eat smaller and more frequent meals during the day. Including foods that are high in complex carbohydrates are good for an acid reflux diet. These foods include rice, pasta and breads. They can tie up excess stomach acid, thus making them easier on your stomach.

If you are serious about an acid reflux diet then you will want to avoid foods that are high in fat content. These foods remain in your stomach longer, which requires more stomach acid to aid in the digestion of these foods. Beer is a common contributor to acid reflux because it doubles your stomach acid in just one hour. Wine and pop also are contributors to acid reflux.

Not everyone’s acid reflux diet plan is the same. There could be foods that trigger it for you and for someone else; those same foods may not cause a problem at all. It is important to see a doctor, because they can help you work on a plan that is best suited to you. You can then experiment with different foods to determine what the main culprits are in your diet.

Regardless of what you ultimately decide on for your own acid reflux diet plan, other factors that will help you deal with this condition. Do not lie down right after you have eaten a meal. You should remain in an upright position for at least forty-five minutes after eating. When you do lie down, elevate your head about six to eight inches.

In conclusion, if you suffer from an acid reflux condition, consult a physician and start to work on changing your eating habits. You will be thankful that you have taken that first step to an acid reflux diet.

What acid reflux foodstuffs should I not eat? The majority of sufferers of acid reflux are baffled by this question. Preferring healthy foods based on selective eating between what to increase or decrease can bring long-term health advantages to acid reflux sufferers. Changes in lifestyle and diet are considered to be parts of a long-term holistic acid treatment and are integral and inseparable.
Reducing consumption of unsuitable foods and adopting new dietary habits particularly to help digestion for acid reflux sufferers could bring about a hugely positive effect on your current condition of gastro esophageal reflux disease. The food we eat is determinant in the maintenance of the delicate and natural internal equilibrium of our bodies. Certain dietary habits and nutrition have been found to contribute indirectly or directly to the worsening of GERD. These kinds of foods are:
1. Coffee and other drinks containing caffeine result in increases in acidity, so avoid large quantities of coffee. Limit your consumption each day to two cups of coffee or less if possible. When you can, divide your cup of coffee into two half cups and drink less coffee before bedtime.
2. Alcohol can also be at the same time a relaxant for the LES muscle and an irritant for the stomach, causing an increase in acidity and reflux.
3. Among the worst offenders for acid reflux symptoms are foods that are high in fat. Longer to be digested and more difficult to eliminate from your body, they push up the probability that acid refluxes into your esophagus. Exceptionally however, fish and fish oil omega-3 fatty acids are in fact strong anti-inflammatory agents.
4. If you are a chocolate addict, make dark, organic types your preference and do not exceed two or three minuscule squares two or three times in any week. Because it contains large amounts of caffeine and fat, chocolate can also boost acidity, worsening digestion, and for that reason should not be eaten.
5. Before going to sleep, make sure that you do not drink milk or consume any products based on milk containing a lot of calcium.
6. Avoid strong mint in food and also herbal tea that is mint-based. Acid reflux symptoms can be worsened by peppermint and spearmint amongst others.
7. Foods high in acid (oranges and tomatoes for example) and cruciferous vegetables (such as cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, spinach, brussels sprouts) trigger opening of the esophageal sphincter leading to more acid reflux.
In this case which acid reflux food is to be avoided? By making these changes in your diet and with the right motivation to change your lifestyle, you can move to vanquishing acid reflux and enhance your well-being and quality of life. No matter what your acid reflux level is, when you take the decision for better quality of life, you literally have the choice to tackle acid reflux and stop it recurring, by taking the holistic approach. The power to do that will be yours.

Obesity and a high body mass index (BMI) are major contributors to the symptoms of acid reflux syndrome. Therefore, it is only logical that weight loss can be an important part of your acid reflux treatment plan if you are overweight. Carrying excess fat puts pressure on your stomach, causing your stomach contents to rise, making it more likely that the Lower Esophageal Sphincter will not be able to stop stomach acids from refluxing into the esophagus. Additional fat in the area of the face, neck, and chest also puts more pressure on the esophagus, restricting it and weakening the ’seal’ between itself and the stomach.
It is therefore easy to see how losing weight will generally lead to decreasing acid reflux syndrome symptoms. By reducing the fat around your stomach and esophagus, you can minimize or even eliminate many of your symptoms. To accomplish this, lifestyle changes are required. This includes a change in diet and activity level.
Here is some weight loss and lifestyle changes that can make a positive difference to your acid reflux syndrome symptoms:
- Increase the amount of water-soluble fiber foods in your diet. Water-soluble fiber can be found in raw, fresh vegetables and fruits. These are foods that are generally easily digested by your body and ensure that you remain regular so that you don’t end up bloated and avoid a toxic buildup in your digestive tract.
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Try not to eat a meal that is bigger than the size of your fist in one sitting and increase the frequency of meals to about five times a day. This not only helps your metabolism effectively digest the food you’re eating, but it also reduces the chance of over eating, helping to keep your stomach acid levels consistent.
- Try not to lie down within three hours of eating a meal. This will help your stomach acids stay where they are supposed to be (because of gravity) allowing them to do their job of breaking down food more effectively so that you’ll receive more nutrition from everything you eat.
- Avoid carbonated and acidic drinks. Not only do these kick acid reflux syndrome symptoms into gear, but also the average person could lose up to 20 pounds per year just by cutting them out of their diet.
- Eat an apple a day. The old phrase says that it keeps the doctor away, and it was right. Eating apples for many help to clear up acid reflux attacks and are healthy, weight loss-friendly sweet treats.
- If you’re feeling hungry think before you eat. Often this can because the body is dehydrated rather than needing food. Ensure you always have some water to hand to sip throughout the day and aim to have 8 – 10 8oz glasses. This helps avoid unnecessary food consumption, hydrates the body and also ‘washes’ any lingering refluxed acid out of the esophagus.
- Avoid activity that involves bending over straight after eating, as this action can place additional pressure to the LES and cause acid reflux.
Avoid falling into the trap of using commercial diet programs to lose weight for acid reflux syndrome. Though they may be effective for losing weight, they don’t necessarily help you to build the right kind of lifestyle, nor do they have acid reflux syndrome in mind in the foods that they select.
It’s important that you get to know the kinds of foods that should make up the bulk of your diet, those you can eat on occasion, and those that you should avoid altogether, not only for your waistline, but also for your acid reflux syndrome. Though this may seem like a lot of information at first, you’ll be surprised at how quickly you learn about what is right and what is wrong for your digestive system.
